A man is in prison for eight years for a vehicular manslaughter - he was driving drunk and hit someone with a car and that person died. Prisoner doesn’t really care about the person he killed and doesn’t really blame himself. Life in prison is hard and he is not sure if he can live until the end of his sentence. One day he mistaking gets a letter from someone outside the prison, he decides to respond and they begin to write each other. Eventually they become friends despite the circumstances and the fact that they only communicate through letters - the person lives too far to visit. Prisoner writes that these letters were the only thing that helped him to live through his sentence. He finally writes that his sentence is almost over and in a few days he will be out and promises to come and visit the person who has become his best and only friend. On the last day of his sentence he gets a response - a letter from a relative of this person saying that this person was killed by a drunk driver yesterday. Prisoner is devastated and upon leaving the prison goes to this person’s city and finds his house, however someone else lives there now. Prisoner finds the relative who sent him the letter but the relative says that he sent that letter eight years ago.
